Mel has been training/coaching boxing since 1978. In that time he's owned or operated 7 different gyms and trained a good number of pro and amateur boxers. He's trained a number of NE champions in the pros and Golden Gloves. In the pros he's been involved in 3 world title fights, trained an Olympian in 1992, and a Silver Gloves national champion. He joined HICB a couple of years ago to "help out" his friend Sean Farley. Mel assists Sean with training the kids who want to become more "serious" boxers. He builds upon the fundamentals that they learned from Tom, and teaches them more advanced methods of foot movement, punching off defense, slipping punches, head movement and counter-punching. His approach to training is to keep moving and not become a stationary target. Over his 46 years as a trainer (with one year off for COVID), Mel has been an influence for hundreds of kids with his approach to boxing, and generally being a good person. His energy and passion have been a welcome addition to the Haverhill Inner City Boxing Club. |
